Mark Olason

“Thoughtful design is more necessary than ever, and should be utilized in all aspects of our lives”

AOME Office

Mark Olason decided on a career in Architecture at age 9, while sitting at his uncle’s drafting table. His love of drawing was fostered by his mother, a fine arts major, and father, a “weekend warrior” of household projects who gave him an understanding of, and appreciation for construction. Architecture seemed the perfect blend of art and craft.

Mark most enjoys the initial stages of Schematic Design, where a blank sheet of paper succumbs to program, site, context, economics and historical and contemporary influences to yield a previously unrealized form. It is those moments where elegant solutions are found to solve complex problems that keep Architecture exciting. It is further rewarding to see clients pulled into the process with an appreciation for how good design can enhance their lives. With the current global challenges that we are facing, thoughtful design is more necessary than ever, and should be utilized in all aspects of our lives.

Mark lives on Bainbridge Island spending time finding solutions to his home’s design problems that were previously unknown to his wife, Mary. Mark was instrumental in providing design input into their two children, but left construction to Mary. The family spends time traveling, boating Puget Sound, skiing and relaxing together.
